In Cornwall, surfing is part of the culture. An amazing way to have fun, get fit and experience the power of nature all at once! We love to encourage our guests to get out in the waves and have a go. When it comes to learning to surf, the best way to find your feet is with a surf lesson. When our friends at Escape Surf School offered us the chance to experience a professional surf lesson for ourselves – how could we refuse?! We learned many things in that lesson but one above all: When it comes to surf lessons in Newquay, you need look no further than Escape.

Our Lesson

Booked for 11am on the stunning Towan Beach in Newquay, we arrived full of excitement and were greeted by smiley co-owner and ex-pro surfer Mike (check out his impressive list of achievements on their website!). After getting kitted out in Escape rash vests and wetsuits, we were soon carrying our boards down to the beach. The class was split into groups of five and each group was given its own instructor. We were lucky enough to get Henry, whose enthusiasm, knowledge and love for the sport became apparent within moments.

The lesson begins sat on the beach where your instructor assesses your individual ability and experience. Henry briefed us on techiniques and surfing skills as well as safety and water awareness. Once in the water, it became clear that all the instructors were experts in the ways of the sea. While we were surfing, the encouragement really kept everyones motivation up! I was struck by how effortlessly the instructors were able to assess the sea and the students at the same time. Advising which waves to paddle for, watching for the technique an providing constant feedback and encouragment. Kind words and expert tips were adundant from every Escape instructor, their passion for surfing as apparent as the perfectly rolling waves.

The lessons are 2 hours long, giving you ample time to get to grips with the technique and practice. For the entire duration we were out in the water, there was nothing but smiles all round.

The School

Escape Surf School is based right next to the beautiful surfing hotspot Towan Beach. The view of the beach from the school has your excitement up before you even put on your wetsuit! Escape has been teaching surfing for 17 years and is one of the longest running surf schools in the UK. Whats more, they are the only school in Newquay to boast 2 ex-professional surfers on the coaching team! Head coach Mike Young and Senior coach Reubin Pearce really know their stuff and are both exceptional teachers.

Besides the pro team, what sets Escape Surf School apart is that they are a specialist surf school. Their passion lies in surfing, as does their focus. They are the only surf school in Newquay who offer outback, technical and progressive surf lessons on a daily basis.
