Porthtowan beach

Porthtowan Beach

Porthtowan Beach is a wide, sandy expanse, especially at low tide, offering ample space for sunbathing and barefoot walks. The beach’s dramatic setting, flanked by steep cliffs, adds to its charm, while the shallow rock pools are perfect for a little exploration. Known for its fantastic surf, Porthtowan attracts surfers of all levels, from first-timers to pros, with lifeguard coverage during peak season.

Chapel Porth

Chapel Porth Beach is nestled in a narrow valley on the St Agnes Heritage Coast and oozes natural beauty and adventure. When the tide’s out, visitors can explore rock pools, caves and wide reaching sands. The surf conditions are fantastic when the waves are right, too! At high tide, the beach narrows to sit between two majestic cliffs. Head to the nearby café for a true local legend – the “hedgehog” ice cream – comprised of Cornish ice cream and clotted cream rolled in crushed hazelnuts. Above the beach are the dramatic ruins of the Wheal Coates tin mine, offering stunning views on the walk towards St Agnes.

Things to Do

  • Surfing – Porthtowan is one of Cornwall’s best-known surf spots, boasting a fantastic break that draws surfers from all over. The long, sandy beach provides plenty of space for beginners to catch their first waves, while more experienced surfers will enjoy the curl of the waves that roll in here.
  • Coastal Walks – Porthtowan is an excellent base for walking enthusiasts. The South West Coast Path offers breath-taking views, with cliffs, coves, and rich coastal landscapes to admire. Heading east, you’ll encounter the remains of Wheal Charlotte’s engine house, a reminder of Porthtowan’s industrial past.
  • Parc Shady – For a peaceful woodland walk, Parc Shady offers a tranquil ramble along a stream. Particularly stunning in spring, the light filtering through the trees and the babbling water create a serene atmosphere.

Dining

Porthtowan is home to two fantastic eateries that are perfect for a relaxed meal with a view. The Unicorn sits just above the beach, offering an exceptional menu, trendy decor and a great selection of drinks in a cosy, laid-back setting. For those after a casual yet tasty meal, The Blue Bar is another favourite, located right next to the beach, serving up delicious food with a stunning view of the waves rolling in. Both restaurants create an ideal setting for a relaxing meal after a day of beach fun or coastal exploration.

Dogs

Porthtowan is a fantastic spot for dog owners, with both the beach and surrounding trails offering lots of space for your four-legged friend to explore. The beach is dog-friendly from 1st October to Easter, as well as before 7 a.m. and after 7 p.m. between Easter and 30th September. Enjoy coastal walks that take you towards nearby coves or venture inland to explore the scenic trails through woodlands and hills.
