Rebecca by Daphne Du Maurier
No Cornwall-inspired reading list would be complete without a Daphne du Maurier novel. Daphne moved to Cornwall as a young woman in the late 1920s. Her inspiration came from its towns and landmarks as the settings for her novels.
Rebecca is a haunting, Gothic tale of a young bride who moves to the Cornish countryside with her new husband, an enigmatic widower. The novel is set just outside the waterside town of Fowey where Daphne lived herself, a 50-minute drive from Newquay.
- You can currently catch the latest film adaption of Rebecca on Netflix, starring Lily James and Armie Hammer.
Blue by Lisa Glass
Set on the beaches of Newquay, this coming-of-age trilogy is perfect for teenagers or young adults hankering after the Cornish surfer dream!
The story focusses on a summer romance between sixteen-year-old surfer Iris and pro-surfer Zeke. They meet one day in a yoga class and… well you’ll see. Over the summer Iris experiences love and new friendships – but is Zeke all he seems?
The Shell Seekers by Rosamunde Pilcher
This beautifully detailed novel is the story of Penelope Keeling, her three children, and their grandfather’s painting; ‘The Shell Seekers’.
The story sees Penelope reflecting on her bohemian childhood in Cornwall in the fictional seaside town of Portkerris. Get to know her story of growing up Cornish with an artist father and French mother. Portkerris is a real-life private beach in Cornwall, but the town is said to be based on St Ives, only a 45-minute drive from Newquay.
The Salt Path by Raynor Winn
If you’re dreaming of striding out on the South West Coast Path, this is the book for you!
Shortlisted for the 2018 Wainwright Golden Beer Book Prize, The Salt Path is the life-affirming true story of Raynor Winn and her husband Moth, who embark on an incredible journey along the 630 miles of the South West Coast Path after losing everything. It’s a tale of coming to terms with grief – and the remedial power of nature and the sea.
A Cornish Summer by Catherine Alliott
One for the chick lit fans, A Cornish Summer is the twist-and-turn tale of Flora and her various relationships, including with her ex-husband – who she’s still in love with – and a mother-in-law from hell.
It all comes to a head on the sunny shores of Cornwall one summer, and as with all family sagas, there are secrets waiting to be unveiled.
