There is such an abundance of wildlife on the Cornish coast! From seals and dolphins to sea birds and jellyfish – keep reading to find out the best places to discover the beautiful animals that call Cornwall home.

Where to see Seals

Is there anything more exciting than spotting a seal? We don’t think so. A chance sighting of a grey seal – or better yet, a colony of grey seals sleeping on the shore – will never cease to take your breath away. There are locations along the coastline where you can catch a glimpse, so it’s important to keep your eyes peeled as you walk along the headlands and the coast path. If you do happen to spy one, make sure you give them their space and adorable as they are, never approach seals for a closer look. (This disturbs their daily patterns, and can cause create confusion to them when hunting or resting).

River Gannel Estuary

One of the best places for birdwatching in Newquay! A walk around the River Gannel Estuary gives you a chance to spot many species. From little egret to godwits, greenshanks to plover, dippers to wavers, a stay on this side of Newquay is sure to have you pointing at the sky and shouting ‘look!’. Stay somewhere on the Pentire Headland for easiest access to this area!

The best spot to stay for coast path access that takes you past the River Gannel & seal hot spots is Pentire! Check out our properties here!

Compass Jellyfish

These pretty sea creatures arrive as early as May, usually stay until around September time. They can usually be seen rolling in on the surf, and if you take a walk around the Towan headland (in Newquay, between the harbour and Fistral beach) you can often spot them floating in the sea – their markings making them easy to identify. If you do come by one, make sure you don’t touch it as like most jellyfish, they sting!

Dolphins

One of the most celebrated inhabitants of Cornwall’s waters, their playful manner makes them easier to spot than you might think! They have a habit of leaping out of the water as they swim, which means their pods can be seen anytime from around May and throughout the summer. The most frequently seen dolphin in North Cornwall is the common dolphin, with numerous sightings around the Mawgan Porth area every year.
