Owned by renowned celebrity chef Rick Stein, the Cornish Arms is a local village pub set lovingly in the Cornish countryside in St Merryn. Holywell Bay Beach
This is one of our favourite coastal walks here at Self Cater Cornwall! The combination of fresh sea air, stunning sea views and beautiful seaside nature makes it an unmissable way to spend a day for those holidaying in Newquay and the surrounding areas. You’ll follow to coast path from Newquay that takes you past the River Gannel Estuary to Crantock beach, then on past Polly Joke along the rugged North Cornwall coastline. The walk culminates in the awe-inspiring view of Gull Rock at Holywell Bay.
St Nectan’s Glen, Trethevy, North Cornwall
Although there’s much to be said for spending a week on one of our 11 beautiful Newquay beaches, when you branch out a little, what you’ll discover will take your breath away. One of Cornwall’s most awe-inspiring spots is St Nectan’s Glen. Less than an hour’s drive up the coast and you’ll find yourself on an enchanting woodland walk that leads to a mesmerising waterfall. At this sacred site, the river Trevillet has carved its way through the slate, created a magnificent 60-foot waterfall and punched a hole through the original basin. The water now cascades through it into the beautiful valley.
Port Isaac, North Cornwall
You may recognise this idyllic little harbour town from hit T.V series Doc Martin, or the 2019 movie Fisherman’s Friends, or the 2000 film Saving Grace, or Poldark… the list goes on! St. Michael’s Mount, South Cornwall
A 45-minute drive South-West of Newquay lies a civil parish and town called Marazion, on the shore of Mount’s Bay. Linked by a low water causeway is the magical tidal island of St. Michael’s Mount. Re-opening for February half-term, we can’t recommend a day out here enough! St. Michael’s Mount is the legendary home to the world’s most well-known giant, Cormoran, made famous by the Cornish folktale Jack and the Beanstalk. There’s only one word to describe the castle that sits at the top and the gardens that surround it – wow.
Porthcurno, Cornwall or Caribbean?
One of the UK staycationers hidden gems, Porthcurno has 647 5-star reviews on Tripadvisor with many remarking on its Caribbean-like qualities. Translated from Kernowek, Porthcurno translates as ‘Cove of Horns’ and is named for its curved rock pinnacles. It’s also one of the UK’s top 10 picnic hotspots!
